THURSDAY'S SOUL MUSIC SHINE(EXHIBIT 3):BETTY DAVIS

THURSDAY'S SOUL MUSIC SHINE(EXHIBIT 3):BETTY DAVIS

She may not have wanted to love you but you couldn't help falling in love with her,Betty Davis was and still is the original nasty girl of funky black music.Born July 7Th 1945 as Betty Mabry she was always in the forefront and she started her emergence into stardom by doing photo spreads for magazines such as Glamour and Ebony.

She burst into the funk music scene after her marriage to jazz legend miles davis(who later divorced her),At this time she collaborated with Jimi Hendrix and Sly stone. Her break out cut "Anti-love song" solidified her position of always going against the grain. Her albums "Betty Davis","They say I'm different",and "Nasty gal" along with many releases were greats works of non-conformist left lane music but they never gained mainstream recognition because of her lyrics and wild attitude.

She stopped making making music but her influence never lost momentum. She had the sauciness of Erykah Badu,The grime of Janis Joplin, and the stage presence of Beyonce.
Funk has never been the same since betty left the game,Make sure you take the time to do the knowledge fiery singer we sometimes forget about.

THURDAY'S SOUL MUSIC SHINE(EXHIBIT 2):THE METERS

WHEN YOU IMAGINE FUNK...I MEAN PURE UNAPOLOGETIC NASTY FUNK...WHO COMES TO YOUR MIND?
OF COURSE PARLIAMENT FUNKADELIC,JAMES BROWN,SLY STONE,THE OHIO PLAYERS,AND BRICK COME TO MIND BUT TO ME THOSE NAMES ARE MAINSTREAM COMPARED TO THE METERS.MANY MANY MANY PEOPLE HAVE NEVER HEARD A METERS SONG BUT I BET THEY HAVE PIECES OF THIS GROUP'S MUSIC IN THE HIP HOP R&B AND ROCK FOR THE LAST 30 YEARS.THE METERS HAIL FROM NEW ORLEANS,LOUISIANA AND IT'S BAND MEMBERS ARE...

Art Neville (keyboard, vocals)
George Porter, Jr. (bass, vocals)
Russell Batiste, Jr. (drums)
Brian Stoltz (guitar)

THEY NEVER HAD A MAINSTREAM HIT BUT THEY ARE ADMIRED FAR AND WIDE BY GREAT MUSICIANS AND LISTENERS ALIKE.

IF YOU LISTEN TO THEIR MUSIC YOU WILL HAVE A GUESSING GAME WHILE LISTENING TO THE SAMPLES USED IN HIP HOP AND R&B SONGS AND THE PEOPLE THAT HAVE USED THEIR MUSIC IS TOO MANY TO NAME BUT WILL NEVER MATCH THEIR MUSICAL ACCLAIM.

DO THE KNOWLEDGE AND RESEARCH ON THESE REMARKABLE MUSCIANS.

DJ MONTY WITH THE DOPE SOUND HAS GOT LOVE FOR WHITNEY HOUSTON AND HER FAMILY!!!!!!!

DJ MONTY WITH THE DOPE SOUND HAS GOT LOVE FOR WHITNEY HOUSTON AND HER FAMILY!!!!!!!

F.Y.I....THIS IS AN OLD POST BUT I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FITTING IN REGARDS TO THE HOLIDAYS.
So it's the day after the big Whitney Houston interview on the Oprah Winfrey show and I finally realize why they had to do a two part interview,(suspense building!!!!!!)
The biggest reason is that it's Whitney goddammit!!!!!How big can you get?!!!!!And Oprah!!!!WOW!!!!!

Although I did'nt see part 2 of the interview I can only comment on what I saw and with that being said....

Can we give Whitney an applause?!
Can we give Whitney a big hug?!
Can we embrace her mother and her daughter for wanting her to do better?!

Let's be honest with ourselves when Whitney described the hell and isolation that she went through did we not see ourselves? She bacame a mirror and through this we saw Whitney Houston as our daughter, our mother, our aunt, our grandmother, our sister, our brother, our cousin, the woman who does your wife's hair, our barber, our doctor, your babysitter because all those people shared her plight.I can't think of one single person is perfect and without error. In writing this I also have to ask for forgiveness because there was a time that I myself was Whitney Houston basher and I even said made comments regarding her daughter.I understand that that was not fair because like she expressed in the interview she is a human and she just wanted to have a normal life outside of her fame and her daughter suffered the consequences because of who her mother was.

I think that we should have a newfound sensitivity for celebrities just as we do normal people.I think that because these people make millions to billions of money we feel like that they are exempt from just good old fashion t.l.c and healing.I think that we need to pray for our celebrities as well as those that are not famous,Celebrities are humans at the end of the day just like us but they get persecuted ten times worse because they are magnified in the public eye.

At the end of it all,I have a newfound respect for her and I fell in Whitney all over again because of her honesty. She has become pure to me and it shows that in life redemption is never too far behind.

In regards to Bobby Brown,I do not advocate the things that he did or did not do but i do believe that he needs help just like his ex-wife chose to seek.I refuse to pass judgement and also keep in mind that we have only heard Whitney's side of the story but for what it's worth she did a very noble thing.I also want to give praise to her mother and her family who stepped in to break the chains of destruction that held her loved for so long.

Don't let death be the reason that we comment or blog on something or someone that we can start to help today.

Peace

GO LADIES!!!!! (EXHIBIT A)

GO LADIES!!!!! (EXHIBIT A)

GO LADIES PART 1
For the last couple of months there has been something that has been been wrestling, bothering, and shaking me down to the core of my consciousness and at the same time has left me helpless as a little baby and has me asking myself what's a man to do?This thing that I am talking about is the lack of female representation in alsmost all aspects of hip hop music. Before I start though let's dig a little deeper,Hip hop is not the only platform where the female status quo is absent. If we do our research and look across the board from Rock,Reggae,Heavy Metal,And many more other genres we find the same problem.

Now there are some exceptions to this possibly in gospel music the female to male ratio almost neck and neck but for the most part the music game is run by males and dominated by males.Let's continue to look a little deeper shall we?Movies,Television,Politics,Even Comic Books are predominatly filled with male characters and male actors. To get to the the root of this issue there is a sensitive wound/scab that I don't think too many people are willing to pull back and confront.in the beginning of this blog i focused on the lack of female representation in hip hop music, I did this for a myriad reasons and here they are....

1. MOST HIP HOP MUSIC EXUDES A VERY ALPHA MALE MACHO VIBE THAT DISPLAYS LITTLE TO NONE POSITIVE FEMALE INFLUENCE,IT'S ALMOST AS IF MOST MALE RAPPERS FORGOT THAT THEY WERE BROUGHT INTO THIS WORLD BY MOTHERS WHO JUST SO HAPPEN TO BE FEMALES.(BUT ON THE REAL THOUGH SHOUT OUT TO THE FATHERS.)

2.HIP HOP MUSIC IS SOMETHING THAT IS CLOSE TO MY HEART....I GREW UP LISTENING TO IT AND WATCHING IT SO IT'S SOMETHING THAT I TAKE PRIDE IN AND CARE ALTHOUGH I DO NOT AGREE WITH EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON WITHIN THE CULTURE.

3.THE EMERGENCE OF HIP HOP,MUCH LIKE POLITICS WAS DONE VIA GRASSROOTS.IT STARTED FROM THE CONCRETE WITH NOTHING AND NOW IT SOMETHING THAT IS VERY DOMINANT AND MAINSTREAM.AT THE SAME TIME THERE HAD TO BE FEMALES THAT HELP WITH THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE CULTURE,WHAT ABOUT THEM?WE HEAR NOTHING ABOUT THEM!

In writing this I must admit that I have a wife who is a femcee(a female mc)and in my union with her i share her pain and concerns regarding this matter. We have had conversations both heated and agreeable where we realistacally lay the issue out on the table.but before i married my wife there was still that feeling of unfairness within the genre.I am a fan of hip hop and I am also a dj so i guess I have an extra interest in any artist male or female because i am nerd for music,But I have a special soft spot for mcs like Rah digga,Bahamadia,Mc Lyte,Queen latifah,The Conscious Daughters,Emperess, and many more not based off any thing but talent. This handful of femcees not weigh anything against the bulk of femcees who never got a chance to heard just beacause they are females who are trying to bust in to the boys club which we so lovingly call hip hop. This group of ladies needs to be heard just like anyone else and should not be bombarded with sexist propaganda that has nothing to do with music.Another thing that came to mind while writing this was the seperation in the rewards and awards shows relating to music.

Why are female and male categories seperated and split down the middle?isn't a female mc just as a talented as a mc and vice versa? In seperating female mcs and grouping them into a category their own we run the risk of displaying a sort of musical segregation instead of looking at talent for it truly is....pure,raw,unapologetic and healing.

None of these attributes i just listed are neither female or male.It should also not be taken as a misunderstanding that I am male bashing those males in hip hop because I believe that the blames falls on both sides of the table.I am merely opening a dialogue to a conversation about this issue that plagues us.Take the time and look around you and see if you relate and agree to the with my statements regarding the lack of female representation not only in music but life in general.I am not trying to change the world but i do want to talk about it.

Stay tuned for part 2....

THURSDAY'S SOUL MUSIC SHINE(EXHIBIT 1):WILLIE HUTCH

THURSDAY'S SOUL MUSIC SHINE(EXHIBIT 1):WILLIE HUTCH

I want to take some time and shine some light on a dark and underrated area in soul music.....the songwriter.People sometimes forget the importance of a true songwriter in music today where songwriters wear multiple hats as the Producer,Engineer,Manager,Etc.that position as a pure songwriter can easily be over saturated. With that being said I want to go back to a time where songs really meant something and the person who wrote the song was not trying to be a star....he or she just wanted to be a master of their craft.

One special person who comes to my mind in this case is Willie hutch.Although few may know his name,Willie hutch's music can rival with the music of more notable soul legends like Stevie Wonder,Donny Hathaway, and Otis Redding and his music has stood the test of time as well. His voice displayed a rich tone unlike any other and there was a pure honesty in his singing.Through his work with Motown Records as a staff writer,Providing music for the soundtrack to "The Mack",and Releasing his own masterpieces Hutch sometimes fails to get the credit that matches perfectionist against a novice.

His voice,Lyrics, and compositions can be heard in music Usher to three 6 mafia.I encourage you to introduce yourself to his music and do some research on this sometimes forgotten but never duplicated artist.
Peace.
